Mies van der Rohe Haus

For the month-long summer program Open House, Berlin-based artist Richard Sides presents a mixtape he has developed especially for Mies van der Rohe Haus as a spatialized arrangement that moves throughout the site. Various furniture pieces are activated by being transformed into a clandestine speaker installation that can be used to live and to listen. Reenacting the building’s former use as a private residence, Sides turns the institution into an instrument for music and sound pieces.

Working as an artist and a curator, Sides is interested in the psychosomatic potential of media. By critically reflecting on the commodification of ecstasy and emotion, his sculptures, paintings, and sound pieces create a sense of experience by dislocating normalcy.

Open House marks Mies van der Rohe Haus‘ summer program, which also includes an one-evening presentation by publishing platform BUS on Friday, 4 September at 7 pm, as well as picnic events. Richard Sides’ extended mixtape is the institution’s second engagement with sound this year, after the presentation of London-based label Concentric Group in March.

BUS presents a live performance by percussionist Enrico Malatesta and No Brainer, a video feed developed as a continuation of the installation Open House.

Drawing attention to themes around documentary, music and domestic space, No Brainer is a video feed that hosts a program of moving image compiled by Richard Sides.

Enrico Malatesta is a percussionist and sound researcher based in Italy, active in the fields of experimental music, sound-territory exploration, and performance. He explores sound, space, and the body, as well as the vitality of materials and the morphology of surfaces, with particular attention to percussive acts and touch-based listening.

BUS is a publishing platform run by Richard Sides.

DESINTEGRATION is a one-act play written and directed by Erika Landström, adapted for the Mies van der Rohe Haus and the installation Open House by Richard Sides. The performance marks the finissage.

Erika Landström is an artist and writer working across performance, installation, sculpture, and text. She writes and directs plays, publishes criticism and poetry, and makes sculptural work. Her writing has appeared in Artforum, Texte zur Kunst, BOMB Magazine, Frieze, and various anthologies. Recent dramatic works have been presented at Artists Space, New York; Kunstverein Hamburg; and Klosterruine, Berlin.

Cammisa Buerhaus works between artistic disciplines, developing a hybrid practice across performance, filmmaking, writing, and visual art. She writes and directs confessional-performative psychodramas. Her work has been presented internationally at Kim(?) Contemporary Art Center, CHB Fine Arts, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Buerhaus has acted in productions by Richard Maxwell, Martine Syms, and Jordan Strafer.
