BOOK LAUNCH

Lecture and talk with Clemens Alexander Wimmer

Alongside the current exhibition ALOIS RIEHL. THE FIRST BUILDER OF MIES,

on May 28, 2024, at 6pm

we are launching the newly published book by garden historian Clemens Alexander Wimmer entitled

Gärtner der Nation. Die vier Leben des Karl Foerster.

Karl Foerster is considered the most famous gardener in Germany. He laid the foundations for his fame during the imperial era and the Weimar Republic, but achieved his greatest successes during the Second World War. In the GDR, he was honored with awards as a symbol of humanist tradition and socialism. His troubled past has not yet been addressed.

The well-known garden historian and garden monument conservator Clemens Alexander Wimmer, who has provided important insights into the Riehl Garden in the 10th publication series of the Mies van der Rohe House, traces Foerster's life with the first critical biography and enables a new, multi-layered view of a personality who celebrated equally great successes with his horticultural achievements in four different systems.

The author will be present at the event and will give a lecture on Karl Foerster's relationship to modernism.

Copies of the book can be purchased on this occasion.

Free entrance. Please register until May 25: info@miesvanderrohehaus.de

WORKSHOP MISCHI

Young people, come to the Mies van der Rohe House!

WORKSHOP MISCHI JULY 5-7, 2024

We are creating a temporary architectural office named after Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Karl Friedrich Schinkel called "MiSchi" for short. Here we build and discuss with renowned architects:

Paul Kahlfeldt (Kahlfeldt Architects)

Jörn Köppler (Köppler Türck Architects)

Miriam Plünnecke (BBR)

Alexander Schwarz (David Chipperfield Architects)

Ursula Steinhilber (SESA Architects)

We visit the Altes Museum and the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche and can also view original drawings by Schinkel in the Kupferstichkabinett. For three days, the Mies van der Rohe House will become a building office for designing bold images for the future. There is capacity for 30 children and young people aged 9 to 16.

Registration via email by May 15, 2024!

ALOIS RIEHL. THE FIRST BUILDER OF MIES

Exhibition: 17/03/2024 - 30/06/2024

The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Alois Riehl, Mies van der Rohe´s first client, whose 180th birthday falls on April 27, 2024 and whose death will be commemorated for the hundredth time on November 21, 2024. Haus Riehl was built in Potsdam-Neubabelsberg between 1908 and 1909 by Mies as his first work and soon became an important place for intellectual and cultural exchange. The exhibition spans the arc between Riehl´s philosophy and Mies´architectural thinking. On display are reproductions of newly discovered photographs, taken around 1913, which show Riehl´s house and garden in a colorfulness characteristic of the autochrome process. Learn more.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication as part of the Mies van der Rohe Haus publication series. Learn more.
